Cerebral palsy case reaches $4 M settlement

The obstetrician and the nurse had each "been shown to be neglectful in the past, but were right back on the job anyway," according to the attorney for a California boy who now suffers cerebral palsy as the result of an injury suffered during birth. A claim in the cases said the unborn infant had shown signs of fetal distress that went unrecognized during the delivery process in 2006 at Sierra View District Hospital in Porterville. In an agreement reached recently with the hospital, the boy, now two and a half years old, will receive $4 million as a settlement. The delivering obstetrician and nurse anesthetist, who were not named in a news report, agreed to pay an undisclosed amount in addition to the settlement with the hospital.
