Remicade, a drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease, has been associated with potentially fatal blood disorders and infections, including tuberculosis. At that time there had been 580 reports of adverse reactions, including 12 deaths.
A letter was sent that same month to doctors alerting them that patients using Remicade have suffered reductions in blood and platelet counts that left them more susceptible to abnormal bleeding and infections, including invasive fungal infections and an increased chance of developing tuberculosis. Some patients also suffered central nervous system disorders, including those leading to a swelling and decay of blood vessels. Remicade, whose active ingredient is infliximab,
was introduced in the United States in 1998.
