PHILADELPHIA, JUNE 2, 1999

The city has agreed to pay $1.12 million to settle the federal lawsuit filed by relatives of the South Philadelphia man and his infant son killed two summers ago when a speeding police car jumped the curb and struck both as they stood on a street corner.

The agreement settling the lawsuit on behalf of the late LeeMore Rich was filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia just three weeks before the civil-rights case was to have gone to trial before U.S. District Judge Norma L. Shapiro.

The agreement ends the litigation resulting from one of the most costly motor vehicle accidents in city history. Yesterday's $1,125,000 settlement of the federal civil-rights claim, together with three companion settlements last year, means that city taxpayers will pay a total of $2.53 million for the Aug. 19, 1997 accident that killed Rich, 39, and his 7-month-old son, LeeMore Jordan Rich, and injured Gwenessa Moore, Rich's fiancee and the infant's mother.
