Personal Injury Lawyers: The McManamon Case
Philadelphia Pennsylvania
Woman hurt at roadside construction job
Mother of three struck by van awarded $19.1 million by Luzerne Co. jury
Teresa McManamon was at her job, placing cones along a roadside construction site in Hazleton when she was struck by a van. Her injuries – numerous broken bones and extensive neurological damage – left her incapacitated, unable to work or care for herself or the three children she was raising on her own.
On Jan. 21, 2004, more than two and a half years after the incident, a jury in Luzerne County handed down a $19.1 million verdict for McManamon, 41, of Hazelton, against the driver of the van and Greater Hazelton Health Alliance, the local hospital operator that employed him as a courier. The driver had been cited by State Police after the accident for careless driving.
The case went to trial after McManamon’s attorney, Shanin Specter, was rebuffed in his demand that Greater Hazelton's insurers pay their coverage limit of $11 million. The trial lasted for seven days, with the 12-member jury returning a unanimous verdict.
