Jury Awards $700G In malpractice case

Pennsylvania - New Jersey - New York - Nationwide

March 12, 2008

The following news account was published March 11, 2008 in The Scranton Times-Tribune. The plaintiff was represented by Kline & Specter attorneys Mark A. Hoffman and Geary L. Yeisley, both also former practicing surgeons.

SCRANTON — A jury awarded a Moosic family $700,000 in a medical malpractice case against a local doctor.

Barbara A. Sensi sued Stafford M. Smith, M.D., in the death of her husband, Gerard J. Sensi.

The lawsuit claims Dr. Smith made several mistakes while performing a cardiac catherization procedure on Mr. Sensi in September 2003. He died later that night, the suit says.

Mr. Sensi’s right ventricle was perforated several times during the surgery, the suit claims.

The trial took place last week in front of Lackawanna County Judge Terrence Nealon.  The verdict was reached Friday. The judgment will be paid through the doctor’s insurance.
