It is sold as a dietary supplement under several different names, such as Zaza, TD, Tianna and Pegasus. What most people don’t know is that tianeptine is highly addictive and shares characteristics with a number of controlled substances such as morphine, fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine and can lead to severe psychological and physical dependence.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Poison Control Center received 15 reports of tianeptine poisoning from Pennsylvania and Delaware in a 12-month period between 2023 and 2024. Nine of those patients wound up ventilators and one died.
In addition, the newspaper reported the Center for Disease Control identified 20 “severe” cases of tianeptine poisoning in New Jersey between June and November 2023 alone.
Both the Food and Drug Administration and the CDC have warned of the dangers of tianeptine.
