Following three deaths, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of 113,000 portable bed handles used to help people get in and out of bed.
The CPSC stated that the handles can shift out of place when attached to a bed without the use of safety retention straps which were not provided with all products. This created a dangerous gap between the handle and the side of the mattress. The three reported deaths all involved women who were being cared for at disability or elderly care facilities.
The bed handles, sold by Bed Handles Inc.,  were manufactured in the United States and sold at a variety of health and home stores as well as through catalogues from 1994–2007. Consumers were being told to immediately discontinue use of the product if it was sold without retention straps.
