Settlement reached in San Diego trash truck accident

An employee who was talking on his cell phone while driving a trash truck cost the City of San Diego $18.5 million. The city agreed to pay the large sum in a settlement over an accident in which a child was run over outside a local elementary school. Luke Acuna, now 10, was walking home when the vehicle made an illegal turn and struck him. Witnesses reported the driver was talking on his cell phone at the time. The settlement was the largest in a personal injury case in San Diego history. The boy lost his leg and suffered internal injuries and has endured more than 50 surgeries since the incident.
