Cephalopelvic disproportion, or CPD, occurs when a baby’s head or body is too large to fit through a mother’s pelvis or birth canal. This may be due to a small pelvis, abnormally shaped pelvis, breech or transverse lie position or a large baby. If CPD is not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner, it can cause fetal distress, brain damage, cerebral palsy, brachial plexus injuries and other birth injuries.
With such severe and potentially damaging risks involved, it is important that a physician or nurse midwife properly monitor and assess the progress of labor to determine whether CPD is present. If there is inadequate progress during labor and a baby is stuck in the birth canal for a prolonged period of time, it could lead to fetal distress or a birth injury. If there is a failure to progress during labor, a physician should determine whether a C-section is required.
