Thomas R. Kline is a partner in the Philadelphia Law firm of Kline and Specter, PC practicing in the area of catastrophic injury and complex personal litigation. He is known for his seven- and eight-figure plaintiff's personal injury verdicts in medical malpractice, products liability, premises liability and automobile liability dating back to the early 1980's.

Tom Kline will present a four-hour presentation on his techniques and strategies in the trial of a case from opening speech to closing speech. The presentation will include demonstrations ranging from the basic and fundamental techniques of advocacy to the use of videotape depositions at trial to computer animations. There will be an emphasis on basic skills and strategies relating to opening speeches, direct examination, cross examination, redirect examination, closing and rebuttal speeches. Many aspects of the modern civil trial through the eyes of one of America's top lawyers will be covered. The course is recommended for lawyers interested in basic skills and also advanced trial techniques.

This is a highly focused presentation on the modern trial. The program will begin promptly at 9:00a.m.; there will be a fifteen-minute break at approximately 11:15 a.m. and the program will conclude at 1:15p.m.

Thomas R. Kline, Esq.

Tom Kline received an A.B. degree from Albright College in 1969, an M.A. from Lehigh University in 1971. He received a J.D. from Duquesne University, where he was the recipient of the Distinguished Student Award. He was a law clerk to Honorable Thomas W. Pomeroy of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

Tom Kline's jury verdicts are legendary. He is well-known as trial counsel in Hall v. SEPTA, which resulted in a $50 million jury verdict, a $1 million contempt fine and safety and institutional changes in the transit system.

Among his more recent eight-figure verdicts are a Lehigh County $33.1 million award in a failure to diagnose breast cancer case in Welteroth v. Spectrascan, et al.; a $15 million jury verdict to a Downs Syndrome child in Borkowski v. Russo, M.D., and a $15.2 million verdict to a child who was brain injured during heart surgery in Sears v. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, et al. Most recently, in April 2001 in the case of Matteo v. Check; M.D., et al., involving the death of a 37-year-old physician, a jury awarded $25 million.

Among Kline's recent seven figure verdicts are two cases involving elderly plaintiffs. In December 2000, in (Carter v. Verizon, et al.,) a jury awarded $4.5 million in the deaths of a husband and wife in a case involving an automobile accident, and in July 2001, in Spraggans v. Gain, M.D., et al., a jury awarded $2 million in the death of a 67-year-old woman in renal failure. In January 2001, Tom Kline broke the Indiana County jury verdict record with a $6 million medical malpractice award on behalf of a 6-year-old brain injured child.

Tom Kline is a prolific teacher of trial advocacy and continuing legal education including Trial as TheaterTM. He is presently one of the lead counsel in the Pier 34 litigation, and is counsel in other prominent cases throughout Pennsylvania.
